MySQL Workbench

MySQL Workbench is a software that everyone who works with MySQL database management system should find very useful. This is a tool that has graphical interface (GUI) and can be used by database administrators, designers or developers - in contrast to "mysql" command line tool that may not be suitable for everyone.

The MySQL Workbench is one of a few MySQL GUI tools that I use: phpMyAdmin and free version of Navicat for MySQL are another that I was using in the past before the MySQL Workbench.

The MySQL Workbench is available as a free community version as well as an enterprise paid version. Free community version lacks some of the features that enterprise is equipped with - but in most situations you won't need them anyway.

This tool supports all operating systems and it installation is very simple. User Interface of MySQL Workbench is intuitive and you won't need to spend an awful amount of time to learn how to use the main features of this software.

Just to mentions a few of the broad list of features:

  • visual database design,
  • forward and reverse engineering,
  • SQL editor,
  • module to administer MySQL environment,
  • database migration,
  • MySQL utilities.

This is a tool that I have been using for the last 4 years and I am very glad to see that since the first time I used it this tool is evolving with each release: existing features are polished and new one added.
